At Speranța Shelter, our mission is to rescue homeless and suffering dogs and care for them until we find them a loving and safe place to call home. We also aim to educate and to empower the community about homeless dogs to end abuse and abandonment. In addition, we partner with communities to sterilize roaming dogs in order to reduce the number of dogs breeding on the streets in a humane way.
We aspire to a world where every animal has the chance to know love and care and enjoy a life free from suffering. We want to contribute to changing the lives of homeless companion animals in Romania for the better.
We are a vital haven providing a home, exceptional care, and comprehensive rehabilitation for about 500 dogs.
We rescue dogs in distress, victims of accidents or human cruelty. As long as we have room in the shelter, we respond to all those who ask us for help.
We cannot remain indifferent when we hear about desperate cases of abandoned or injured dogs, but unfortunately we cannot respond to all those who come to us, because our possibilities are limited.
That’s why, along with our work in the shelter, we organise awareness and responsibility campaigns to prevent abandonment and cruelty to animals.
Speranța Shelter is a small drop of joy and happiness for several hundred very lucky dogs.
The shelter currently houses over 500 dogs, including elderly and paraplegic dogs (that are moving with the help of assistive mobility devices). They receive the best medical care, proper food, shelter, love and attention while at the shelter.
The shelter has its own veterinary surgery, ambulatory care, treatment room and a modern physiotherapy clinic, three playgrounds, three swimming pools, a training track. All of these facilities have been created over time to meet the needs of the dogs with the help of our sponsors and the generosity of the general public, our communities who follow (and support) our work on social media channels.
We run tailored rehabilitation and desensitisation programs specifically designed for the emotional recovery of abused and traumatised dogs, giving them the chance to trust and thrive again.
We believe adoption is the best option for those who want a furry friend, and educating people about it can help reduce the number of abandoned dogs.
We are constantly striving to find adopters for the dogs in our shelter because we want all our dogs to know life in a responsible and loving family. We organise events to promote adoptions and to raise awareness of the responsibility we all have towards animals.
We have a rich history of success stories of dogs that have been completely rehabilitated and are now living happily in loving homes. All of these success stories motivate us to continue our mission until all of our dogs are “home”.
Our free sterilization programme works with communities to stabilize and reduce the stray dog and cat population in a humane and sustainable way to improve the welfare of homeless dogs and cats. We annually run sterilisation campaigns across Romania.
We run events and programmes to raise awareness of the responsibility we all need to have towards animals.
Someone once said that “Education is a vaccine against violence”, so we aim through our projects to reduce cruelty to animals and to our fellow human beings and at the same time contribute to reducing the number of abandoned animals.
Speranța Shelter organizes educational activities with children of all ages to teach them about kindness, responsibility and empathy. The development of empathy and responsibility brings with it a better relationship both with other people and especially with the environment, animals and nature.
Thus, children who interact with animals today and with adults tomorrow will feel more connected, less lonely, more stable and happier. Most importantly, they will understand that they are not above nature and animals and will know how to value life in all its forms.
