Speranța Shelter Strengthens Its Mission: Animal Society Joins Our Foundation

Together, for real change

Bucharest, July 1st, 2025

Starting July 1st, 2025, the Speranța Shelter Foundation will expand its capacity to operate both nationally and internationally by officially integrating the team and activities of Animal Society under its umbrella.

This is a natural step, born from years of friendship, collaboration, and shared ideals.

For us, this is not merely an administrative merger. It is a reaffirmed promise that, together, we will continue to be the voice for those who have none. We will keep providing real support to stray animals and communities across Romania and pave the way for greater, deeper, and more lasting impact.

A Collaboration Turned Into Unity

For nearly 25 years, Speranța Shelter Foundation and Animal Society have worked side by side, sharing emotions, challenges, and thousands of successes. We stood together whenever animals needed us most.

Today, this collaboration takes a new, stronger form: uniting teams, resources, and know-how under a common vision.

Together, We Make Room for Hope

The Animal Society team will continue its mission under the Speranța Shelter Foundation. This is more than an merger – it is the consolidation of our shared dream: to be a hub dedicated to rescuing and caring for animals.

We have been managing a shelter with almost 500 dogs for over 25 years and, by bringing in the Animal Society team, we strengthen our capacity to act on a larger scale. What unites us is not only a shared history but, above all, a shared vision: to build a society where every animal is respected, protected, and loved.

We are becoming the first organization in Romania to offer free spaying and neutering services for owned and stray dogs, as well as for cats – a group far too often left without support. Both local authorities and pet owners will gain access to essential veterinary services.

Three Key Directions for Real Change:

  • Free spaying and neutering for dogs and cats, owned or stray
In partnership with local authorities, we are launching sterilization campaigns designed to ethically and effectively reduce the population of abandoned animals. Through this approach, we tackle the cause, not just the effects, of suffering.
  • International missions and strategic collaborations
We have the experience, resources, and partners needed to intervene in critical regions. We will continue working with NGOs, authorities, and institutions in Romania and worldwide to reduce animal suffering across borders.
  • Education and awareness
We are building a culture of empathy through educational programs in schools, shelter visits, volunteer activities, and information campaigns. We want every child to grow up understanding what respect for life means.

How we are doing all of these?

1. Our base: a functional shelter, built from experience

After years of hands-on work managing a shelter, we’ve learned what this daily effort truly entails: logistics, administration, crisis situations, medical interventions, volunteer coordination, and working with authorities. We transformed a vulnerable space into a stable, efficient, and predictable system.

This experience gives us the know-how to build impactful solutions, adapted to the needs of animals and the community. We don’t just provide shelter – we support a sustainable shelter model that can be replicated and adapted wherever it’s needed.

We started as volunteers with good intentions and became professionals in managing a shelter and the stray dog situation. We have elevated what we do to a profession and will continue with specialists in this field who will be by our side.

2. A Team with Deep Roots and Wide Wings

Through this merge, behind us stands one of the most efficient and dedicated veterinary intervention teams. Due to the fact that we have a fully equipped mobile veterinary clinic for interventions in support of animals, we manage to intervene in dozens of counties and in the most isolated areas of the country. All of these are possible thanks to a team of veterinarians, technicians, and experienced catchers who work together in the field, often in challenging conditions.

Large-Scale Interventions, from Romania to Lebanon

Our team has carried out mass spay-neuter campaigns in:
India, Sudan, Jordan, Egypt, Bulgaria, Kosovo, Germany, Italy, Republic of Moldova, Lithuania, Latvia, Macedonia, Albania, Croatia, Serbia – in Belgrade and Kragujevac.

We have been part of rescue missions in areas affected by natural disasters:

  • The floods in Serbia (2014)
  • The devastating explosion in Beirut, Lebanon (2020), in collaboration with Animals Lebanon
  • Kenya, India, Germany

We also participated in vaccinating over 50,000 dogs in Myanmar and rescuing wildlife in conflict or crisis regions such as Gaza, Albania, Libya, but also in countries like Croatia and Bulgaria.

We have collaborated with renowned international organizations:
FOUR PAWS International, Blue Cross of India, UNAMID, Princess Alia Foundation, Brigitte Bardot Foundation, Mingalar Myanmar.

3. Pet-Friendly Education: The Generation That Will Change the World

We believe a meaningful change begins with education. That’s why we are expanding our educational program for students, in partnership with schools and local authorities. Organized shelter visits, interactive activities with socialized dogs, and participation in civic campaigns have already reached over 1,000 children in the last two years.

We are preparing to open Romania’s first educational center dedicated to companion animals – a vibrant, open space where empathy is learned through play, dialogue, and closeness to animals.

Our education and volunteer programs also include collaboration with corporate teams who wish to get involved alongside us. Through the “The Multinational for Good” initiative, we continue to contribute to animal welfare with the help of people from companies who have become true friends of animals.

4. More Than a Roof – a rehoming center

At Speranța Shelter, every dog is treated, spayed/neutered, microchipped, socialized, and loved. We have playgrounds, recovery spaces, relaxation zones, and daily access to the affection offered by volunteers.

All of this sets us on the path to the first rehoming center in this region of Europe – a center that is not just a shelter, but a temporary home for rescued dogs until they reach home, until they have a responsible adoption.

In 2024, we set a record with 124 successful adoptions, but many of our dogs are seniors or have special needs. For them, the “Remote Adoption” program provides constant suppor – a small gesture, but a huge impact.

5. With the help of people like – Be Part of Our Story!

Some abandon them. We sterilize them, treat them, rescue them, and find them families.
