Even if progress is slow, it is visible and, above all, important for his quality of life.
But perhaps the biggest surprise was his „personalized training program”: Șumi took up gardening! Every day we find him enthusiastically digging at the roots of the trees in front of his kennel. We don’t know if he has a clear plan or if he’s just burning off his pent-up energy, but it’s clear that his new „passion” motivates him and keeps him active. And this is vital for a dog with mobility issues.
Watching him go about his daily routine teaches us all a lesson in adaptation and joy despite difficulties. And his sincere smile when he finishes a gardening „job” is priceless.
The latest investigations have shattered the last shred of hope that anything could be done for poor Șumi. Unfortunately, the sad reality is that Șumi will never be able to walk again without the help of a wheelchair.
But he doesn’t seem to care too much, as any puppy is far too confident and eager to explore the world, even in a wheelchair. Șumi has grown bigger, even more handsome, and all day long he roams the kennel yard with his friends, also in their supportive strollers.
He has already become the darling of the shelter, because no one can resist such a face, and what’s more, Șumi is incredibly sweet and lovable. To support his development, because Șumi is still growing, he needs daily physiotherapy sessions, special care and feeding, just like the other paraplegic puppies in the shelter. We have good news and very bad news about our Șumi.
The very bad news is that after the second specialist consultation, we found out that Șumi will most likely never walk normally again, we will see what else can be fixed after the first surgery. For now, we made him a temporary stroller so he can enjoy life too. It remains to be seen if his health will allow his growing organs to remain healthy. Shumi needs support of all kinds, including moral support.
The good news is that Șumi is happy to be here. He’s still with most of his siblings, learning to use his new „hind legs” and is happy every moment, like any puppy his age. He would really like it and would really enjoy it if you visited him in the shelter.
Șumi had his first visit to the vet and a first MRI. The news is quite serious: a piece of fractured bone is pressing on his marrow, so he will most likely undergo at least one surgery. Its’ goal will be to remove the pressure on the marrow.
Most likely, before the surgery we will ask for another opinion and do a second MRI.
Șumi is like any puppy, whether „normal” or disabled: serene, clingy and positive. In fact, he’s a bit more than that – he sends us a lot of gratitude every day. We feel that he overwhelms us with love because, somehow, he knows that there are other people helping him, through their donations and good thoughts. Therefore, we also feel a duty to pass on this sincere gratitude and affection to you. Thank you for your support, literally and figuratively!

Already nicknamed „Șumi” around here, he ended up in the shelter with four other siblings. Of all five, he was the most unloved by fate: a careless or perhaps even evil man hit him, we don’t know exactly how, so he can no longer use his hind legs.
We hope it’s not a fracture with no way back, and we need your help to find out the answer: both your prayers and your donations, because the tests and examinations awaiting Șumi will be very expensive. It depends on the outcome and the diagnosis of the specialists whether he will have to wait a lifetime in a wheelchair or a lot of rehabilitation work in our physiotherapy clinic.

Fundația Adăpostul Speranța a fost înființată în 1996 de Florina Tomescu și, încă de la momentul creării, a contribuit decisiv la bunăstarea animalelor din România, în special la cea a câinilor abandonați și aflați în suferință.
În noaptea de 18.04.2001, personalul Fundației Speranța, alături de echipa Vier Pfoten România, a salvat 300 de câini din adăposturile primăriei, câini care altfel ar fi căzut victime noii legi de eutanasiere. A fost vorba de un veritabil act de salvare în masă într-o perioadă teribilă atât pentru animale, cât și pentru iubitorii de animale.
Câinii de la Speranța au fost salvați din stradă sau din diferite situații-limită. Adăpostul nostru adăpostește circa 500 de câini. Dintre aceștia, 7 sunt paraplegici (beneficiază de îngrijire specială și se deplasează cu ajutorul unor cărucioare), iar circa 200 sunt seniori, adică trecuți de 12 ani. Avem mulți câini bătrâni în adăpost, însă încercăm constant să le găsim și acestora familii.
Fundația Speranța face eforturi pentru a le găsi adoptatori câinilor din adăpost, oferind inclusiv posibilitatea adoptării la distanță. Fundația Speranța organizează permanent evenimente de promovare a adopțiilor și de conștientizare a responsabilității pe care cu toții trebuie să o purtăm față de animale.
Anual, echipa Adapostului Speranța desfășoară programe de sterilizare pentru câini și pisici cu proprietar, proiect pro bono pentru cei interesați.
Adăpostul Speranța se bazează în totalitate pe donații private pentru a îngriji cei peste 500 de câini în fiecare an și pentru a finanța toate programele sale. Cheltuielile lunare pentru întreținerea adăpostului se ridică la peste 30.000 de Euro.
Pe lângă cheltuielile de întreținere, avem nevoie continuă de suport financiar pentru a îmbunătăți condițiile de trai ale câinilor, oferindu-le un mediu curat, sigur și iubitor. Adăpostul a fost constant modernizat, au fost reconstruite padocurile pentru a fi mai confortabile și primitoare pentru locuitorii lor, s-au creat 4 locuri de joacă pentru câini, cele 2 clinici medicale au fost dotate cu aparatură de ultimă generație.
De asemenea, Adăpostul Speranța se implică activ în campanii de promovare a adopțiilor și de educație și conștientizare a responsabilității pe care cu toții trebuie să o avem față de animale, pentru a preveni abandonul și actele de cruzime asupra acestora.
