As so often, life comes with one piece of bad news and one of good.
The bad news: Hopa will never walk again. X-rays have confirmed a complete and irreversible severing of the spinal cord.
The good news: as of today, a new life begins for her. She will be cared for, she will have mobility within the shelter, and she will live alongside our group of paraplegic dogs—a special, empathetic, close-knit and surprisingly cheerful community. They don’t always get along perfectly with “able-bodied” dogs, but among themselves they are true friends.
Our paraplegic dogs are some of the most lovable presences in the shelter. Visit them anytime—once they get to know you, they are absolutely delighted to welcome guests.
This is how we begin 2026: with a cry for help.
This is Hopa — from Hope. Her life began in pain, a pain that has marked her forever. The trauma she suffered left her paralysed, and her first days were filled with fear and suffering.
In the period ahead, Hopa will face a difficult journey: medical examinations, tests, MRI scans and treatments that will determine what chances she has going forward. It may be an intervention that restores her mobility, or a wheelchair that helps her move on. Whatever the outcome, Hopa needs support now.
She is young and her life started on a hard path, but we are here to show her that it can continue on a better one. We cannot change her past, but we can offer her a safer, more dignified future.
Hopa needs you. Every donation means a chance, a step forward, and the hope that no life is ever abandoned at Speranța Shelter.

The cost varies depending on a dog’s age, health, and specific needs, but monthly care typically includes food, medical care, shelter, enrichment, and staff support.
Yes. Speranța Shelter is operated by the registered Romanian animal welfare organisation Foundation „Adăpostul Speranța” (Fundația Adăpostul Speranța).
Unfortunately, Gift Aid is only available for donations made to eligible UK charities. As Speranța Shelter is based in Romania, Gift Aid does not currently apply.
