Sterilise and Save: A Real Solution

Sterilise and Save: A Real Solution to a Real Problem

„Sterilise and Save” is a vital programme within our organisation. Through this project, we annually sterilise owned and stray dogs and cats across dozens of locations in Romania.

Our work is primarily focused on collaboration with local authorities and public shelters across the country. Where time allows, we also treat and rehome animals from these shelters, striving to find them loving families.

Furthermore, our team includes veterinarians and professional dog handlers who often join other projects. Their involvement allows us to educate and inform local communities in Romania about animal welfare, animal rights, and the essential needs of pets.

With over 20 years of uninterrupted work, Sterilise and Save has led large-scale dog sterilisation and cat sterilisation programmes, preventing the birth of countless unwanted dogs and cats.

Through sustained campaigns, veterinary expertise and strategic collaboration. The initiative has become one of Eastern Europe’s most effective animal welfare and dog population control projects.

By prioritising humane canine sterilisation and long-term prevention, Sterilise and Save addresses the root causes of stray dog overpopulation rather than short-term solutions. Its work reduces suffering, improves public health, and supports local communities by promoting responsible ownership and sustainable animal welfare practices.

Our teams travel far beyond the big cities — reaching smaller towns and rural communities such as Vâlcea, Suceava, and Agigea.
Working closely with local councils and veterinarians, Sterilise and Save provides free sterilisation services where they are needed most.

Accessibility is central to the programme’s mission. By providing completely free neutering services by appointment, the initiative removes financial barriers for both owned pets and stray animals. This inclusive approach empowers individuals, families and local carers to take responsible action while ensuring that vulnerable stray dogs and cats also receive essential care.

Offering free neutering for owned and unowned animals helps communities manage animal populations humanely, sustainably, and effectively, reducing the number of unwanted litters and easing pressure on shelters and rescue organisations. Through accessible, no-cost sterilisation, the programme delivers long-term benefits for animal welfare, public health and community wellbeing.

Sterilisation prevents disease, improves animal wellbeing, and reduces abandonment.
It’s both compassionate and responsible — Romanian law requires mixed-breed pets to be sterilised, ensuring a sustainable approach to animal welfare.
Through education and collaboration, Sterilise and Save promotes a lasting culture of care and respect for animals.

The merger between Adăpostul Speranța and Animal Society has amplified the programme’s reach, coherence, and efficiency.
Our united team brings international experience — leading sterilisation campaigns in India, Egypt, Sudan, Germany, Italy, Moldova, Bulgaria, Croatia, and Serbia — sharing humane population control practices globally.

Animals rescued through Sterilise and Save receive full medical treatment, sterilisation, vaccination, and microchipping before entering our adoption programme.
At Adăpostul Speranța, dogs enjoy outdoor play spaces, human interaction, and proper care until they find their forever families.
Our goal is to become a leading rehoming and rehabilitation centre in Eastern Europe.

Sterilise and Save integrates educational initiatives into its mission – from school visits and workshops to public awareness campaigns.
Through the Multinational of Good project, corporate volunteers join the shelter team to improve the lives of rescued animals and promote responsible pet ownership.
Step by step, we’re building a new generation of empathy.
